Our Purpose as a Congregation
Our purpose as a congregation can be discovered by looking at three sources. The Great Commandment, the Great Commission and our congregational Mission Statement.
The Great Commandment, Matthew 22: 37-39
And Jesus said to him, "You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind. This is the great and first commandment. And a second is like it, You shall love your neighbor as yourself."
The Great Commission, Matthew 28: 19-20
“Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, to the close of the age."
The United Christian Parish Mission Statement, adopted 1991
The United Christian Parish is a multi-denominational congregation which embraces the histories and traditions of the United Methodist Church, the Presbyterian Church (USA) and the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ). Our members have a wide variety of talents. We are an extended family of caring people working together for the fulfillment of God’s word through mission and service.
We strive to promote a closer relationship to God through worship, spiritual growth, Bible Study, fellowship and prayer. We are committed to providing all who come with a loving and flexible environment in which to worship God and grow in personal faith. In answer to God’s call we seek to respond to Christ’s command to go into all the world and proclaim the Good News. (Matthew 28:19-20)
We have a great commitment to the great commandment and the great commission and believe this commitment is born out in our mission statement as well. Taken together these lead us to our purpose as a congregation, which is to:
Worship the Lord with all our hearts
Welcome all God’s children into His house
Walk humbly with Christ, deepening our understanding of His teachings
Work to make a better world by showing love for our neighbors
Witness to the awesomeness of God, telling the story until all have heard!
